Microneedling
What is microneedling?
Often called collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a painless process in which micro-injuries are created in the skin which results in increased collagen and elastin production, a more youthful appearance and improved skin tone and texture. Microneedling can decrease pore size, improve fine lines and wrinkles, improve sun damage, melasma, acne scarring, stretch marks and surgical scars. It requires minimal down time and results show in just a few days.
Microneedling is safe for all skin types. Microneedling should be avoided for those who are/have:
● Pregnant
● An active skin infection, undiagnosed lesion, skin cancer or skin condition like eczema or psoriasis
● Immunocompromised, on high dose steroids or being treated with radiation
● Bleeding disorders or on medications that make you an easy bleeder that cannot be stopped
● Serious heart condition or poorly controlled diabetes
● Taking accutane or have within the last 6 months
● Prone to keloid scarring
Before the procedure
Stop retinol creams for 1 week and avoid direct sun exposure for 48 hours. Wait 2 weeks after botox or filler before the procedure. Notify your provider before treatment if you have had recent nose surgery, are breastfeeding or allergic to topical anesthetics. If you are prone to herpetic eruptions you will need to be on appropirate antiviral prophylaxis.
During the procedure
Make-up will be removed and your face cleansed. Numbing ointment (topical anesthetic) will be applied and stay on for 15-20 minutes. After your face is numb, it will be cleaned again and the procedure started. Your face will be treated in sections and additional treatment can be provided to areas of concern like acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and lines and wrinkles. You should not feel pain during the procedure, only vibrations and it should last 15-30 minutes depending on the areas treated.
After the procedure
After the procedure your skin will be pink and feel a little tight. Keeping your skin hydrated and protected will ensure appropriate healing. You will receive a recovery kit that you will use for the next 3-5 days which includes a cleanser, priming oil, firming mask and calming cream. You can expect mild redness and dryness, similar to a light sunburn. After 24 hours you can resume normal activity and wear make up. It is very important you protect your skin from sun exposure for the next week and throughout your treatment. A daily SPF 50 or higher is recommended. You will notice improvements in your skin in just a few days! For maximum results 3-4 treatments are recommended, 4-6 weeks apart. Scars on the body may require additional treatments.
